What up people...this is my homie james top 10 albums of 08'. Mine is coming soon! Please don't be mad cause he didn't list Wayne, he listens to all types of hip hop...
This is my Top 10 list of hip hop albums from '08. I've listened to other types of music all year, but not enough to where I can warrant a list, so I decided to just to my favorite genre which is hip hop. So here we go....
1. Black Milk-Tronic
This album is pure hip hop. Black Milk has been one of my favorite producers since I listened to Popular Demand last year, and to his mixtapes, and his other projects which included The Set Up with his fellow Detroit Alum Fat Ray, and also Caltroit. He has displayed a lot of growth not only as a producer, but also as an emcee. Tronic displays his best assortment of beats which is ranging from live instrumentation, sampling, futuristic, bit of electronica, soul music, and much more. Not to mention that the rhymes are above stellar from not only him, but from the guest stars also which includes Pharoahe Monch, Sean Price, Royce Da 5'9, DJ Premier, and more. From front to back I can listen to this entire album.
2. Q-Tip-Renaissance
It's been nine years since Tip has graced us with a cd which was entitled Amplified. And it seems like that he hasn't missed a beat. The album is sequenced flawlessly, and it creates a perfect balance with mood, beats, and rhymes. Not too mention that the guests on spot on which includes Norah Jones, D'Angelo, and Raphael Saadiq.
3. Jake One-White Van Music
Jake One quickly bounced on the scene by making beats for Freeway, and most noticably 50 Cent on his last album Curtis. His debut cd which dropped in October was a last minute addition to my list after listening to it only one time, it immediately went up to my top 3. Why? Because Jake One bounces from different styles of Hip-Hop ranging from Boom Rap to East Coast to West Coast to Southern. And his cd basically shows off his enormous talent not only behind the boards, but his versatility in working with a wide eclectic group of artists, and also features in my opinion the best verse of 2008 which came from Brother Ali in his verse from "The Truth."
4. Nas-Untitled
This album was of course supposed to be titled Nigger, but we all kind of knew that the idea was there, but we knew that the title wasn't gonna be kept. But reguardless of title, Nas still proves with his latest that he hasn't missed a step, and is still a vital asset to hip hop.
5. Kanye West-808's & Heartbreak
Kanye West has always been a love or hate artist since College Dropout. I happen to favor his music simply for the fact that he is fearless as an artist and 808's is no exception to the rule. They're no auto tune gimmicks here, just good lyrics, and Great Production.
6. The Roots-Rising Down
The Roots still don't get as much love as they should, and Rising Down didn't change things sadly. The Album came and went on the charts and it's a shame because The Roots dropped another great album to an already classic catalog.
7. Termanology-Politics As Usual
Term has been in the Mixtape circuit for a while now, but he proves with his debut that he has not dumbed down his lyrics one bit, and his producers which include Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Hi-Tek, Nottz, and others help him out.
8 T.I.-Paper Trail
As everybody knows T.I. has been in trouble recently, but that hasn't stopped him from dropping one of the best cd's of this year. It's certainly on my list, and he really stepped back up on his lyrical acrobatics (56 bars, I'm Illy, etc).
9. The Game-L.A.X.
The Game has always been an underdog ever since the Dr. Dre collapse happened. Well, with Doctor's Advocate, and now L.A.X., he proves that he fine without both Dre, and Eminem. It also boasts one of my favorite songs of '08, Letters to The King.
10. Ludacris-Theatre of The mind
Definitely not Luda's best, but still on Luda's worst day he can still be one of the best. It's a shame that this album did get overlooked because I personally think that this album was better than his previous one which was Release Therapy.
Honorable Mentions: Blue Sky Black Death-Jean Grae:Evil Genius. Scarface-Emeritus. GZA Protools.
The list was kinda incomplete because there was a couple of albums that I never got to listen to(Elzhi, All of GZA, EPMD) and more, but I did listen to more than enough to compile my list, and i'm happy with it.
Like i said i will be posting mine later...
